'˜Free cat' found abandoned

The Scottish SPCA is appealing for information after a cat was abandoned in Newarthill in a cardboard box alongside a sign displaying the message '˜free cat'.

Scotland’s animal welfare charity was alerted on Sunday when a member of the public came across the female cat in Greenfield Quadrant.

The cat is now in the care of the charity’s animal rescue and rehoming centre in Hamilton where she has been named Friday.

Centre manager Peter Fleming said: “Friday was picked up from Greenfield Quadrant in Motherwell after a member of the public came across her.

“She was inside a wet cardboard box that had the words ‘free cat’ and ‘I am a housecat’ written on it.

“Friday is a beautiful girl who we think is around two years of age. She is in good condition and I just don’t understand why someone would abandon her like this.

“We will look after her until we can find her a loving new home.”

Abandoning an animal is an offence under the Animal Health and Welfare (Scotland) Act 2006.

Being found guilty of doing so can carry a range of punishments up to a maximum of a £20,000 fine, 51-weeks in jail and being banned from keeping animals.
