Free financial advice on offer

A Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) review of the quality of debt management advice found that advice provided by the free sector was “generally of a higher standard” than that given by fee-charging bodies.

East Ren’s money experts can advise people about the availability of Scottish-specific solutions to money management problems.

They can also help residents claim back mis-sold payment protection insurance (PPI) and residents will keep 100 per cent of the cash reclaimed. The money advice and rights team is trained to help people with benefit forms, appeals, budgeting and existing debts.

Councillor Ian McAlpine said: “We are highlighting to residents that free advice is available to all residents who need support to resolve their financial problems. Our welfare rights and money advice staff are experts in their area.”

He added: “Remember that paying for private debt management advice does not guarantee a better quality of advice. Fee-charging debt management companies have a duty to make customers aware that free advice is available but they do not always do so. People can be sure our advice is impartial. We can give advice face-to-face, by phone or e-mail.”
