CAR CAPER: A Cumbernauld man who owned a cult classic motor, a Citroen 2CV, had a holiday with a difference planned. Intrepid Chris Donohue would drive the bright yellow car 786 miles from his home in Westerwood’s Landsdowne Drive to the Italian Alps. Chris said: ‘‘I’m meeting some friends from Holland there so I’ve just told them to look out for the lunatic in the tartan bunnet!’’

CONDODRRAT’S FINEST: The McCreery family of Etive Court were named Cumbernauld Family of the Year. They won a holiday worth £1250 donated by town centre management after raising £20,000 for charity. That included recording a fundraising record which had raised £5500. Dad Bill (36) said: “We just cannot believe this we haven’t had a decent holiday for ages so we are looking forward to planning our trip.’’

PLATE DATE: Local motorists who wanted the new ‘A’ registration plate were creating a boom time for Cumbernauld showrooms. Bob Mutter of Watson’s in Carbrain said: ‘‘Business has been very good. It’s definitely been a record. A total of 53 registration cars were set to leave the showroom on the one day.

ABRONHILL INFERNO: A giant fire at St Lucy’s Primary School destroyed the junior wing of the school before it had even opened. Hundreds of gallons of water were poured onto the split new premises to prevent the flames spreading. At the height of the blaze, firefighters hacked through the roof of the wing to get to the heart of the fire . Many locals looked on in horror as a wall collapsed in the searing temperatures.
