This week in 2003

PALACE INVITE: Girls’ Brigade leader Lucy Miller of Kildrum was awarded the MBE in the Queen’s birthday honours list. The 68 year old Kildrum resident captained the 1st Cumbernauld Unit and had been involved in the brigade since childhood. Meanwhile Condorrat’s Roddy McLeod would receive the same honour for his services to piping.

This week in 1988

JOBS BOOST: An American company - Amscot America - had 100 new jobs carved up for the town. Engineered by the Scottish Development Agency and the Cumbernauld Development Corporation the multi-million pound deal would operate from a 50,000 square foot factory being vacated by Hurstwell Engineering who were moving to Lenziemill.

Happy BIRTHDAY: Members of Cumbernauld Village bowling green was the setting of a hectic week of activity. The bowling club was celebrating its 120th anniversary with a match against the Adrian team from Falkirk, which had been the club’s first ever opponents. The president of the Scottish Bowling Association also joined members for a spectacular birthday party. The bumper week had been three years in the planning.

This week in 1973

CARNIVAL ATMOSPHERE: The Army’s crack aerobatic team treated locals to a breathtaking display in their Sioux helicopters at Cumbernauld Carnival. The low lying manouevres relied on high speed before highly skilled pilots were bringing the choppers down to an aerial standstill. The carnival itself had been officially opened by STV favourite Glen Michael.
