A family fun day takes place on Saturday as part of the ongoing campaign to save Newarthill Library.

The event has been organised by Newarthill Community Council and will take place in Newarthill Bowling Club from 1-4pm.

Although fun is very much on the agenda, as the fight goes on to persuade Culture NL not to close the village library there will be a large focus put on literature.

Community council secretary Josephine McKenzie said: “While we will have the usual events associated with a Fun Day such as face painting and a bouncy castle, the focus will be on stories and books.

“There will be storytelling, a treasure hunt, and a book swap. We would love for people to come dressed as their favourite character from a book or story, with a prize for the best costume!

“Recognising that we are near the end of the school holidays and parents may be low on funds to entertain their family, the event will be free and all children will receive a purvey bag.

“We have been fortunate enough to receive donations of signed books from many Scottish authors and some unique items for auction.

“The Newarthill community has responded very positively to this campaign, and we hope that they can join us to continue their support at this event!”

The campaign to save the library, which is due to close later this month, has received high profile support for the likes of actress Elaine C Smith and writer Damien Barr who are both from the village.
