One of the main attractions at that is Scottish folk singer Alastair McDonald, and there will also be Irish dancers, a children’s fancy dress competition, and archery and beat the goalie competitions.

That runs from 11am until about 4pm.

Weather permitting, the Biggar committee of Cancer Research UK is holding its annual outdoor street market outside the Corn Exchange selling the usual array of bric-a-brac, books, plants, sports equipment, small items of furniture, soft furnishings and other household items.

Any donations will be gratefully received and can be handed in on the morning of the sale. Stalls will open around 10am and they look forward to seeing regular supporters and new faces.

(If the weather is bad, the market will be postponed to the following week)

And while you are in Biggar, call in at the Gasworks Museum, which is holding a steam day on Saturday from noon-4.30pm. The coal-fired boiler will be operating along with various items of steam-driven plant. The museum demonstrates how gas was produced from coal before the discovery of the North Sea oil and gas fields.

The flower show season is getting underway, and Forth Flower Show takes place in the large church hall, opening to the public at 1pm.

And a fun day is being held in Rigside Community Hall from 1.30pm to 4pm to raise awareness of plans to turn the village’s defunct Miners Welfare Club into a 1950s-style diner and transport museum. The fun includes a bouncy castle and face-painting.

Something for everyone of any age!!
