Funding approved for Citz Theatre makeover

The Citizens Theatre Redevelopment Project is set to benefit from a £4 million windfall from Glasgow city council.

The executive committee has authorised an initial £800,000 of funding for conserving and enhancing the historic southside theatre.

Work is set to begin in the summer of 2016, for completion in 2018 — and the council has pledged up to £4m over the course of the project, to make the theatre more economically and environmentally sustainable, as well as improve access.

Bailie Jim Scanlon said: “This new funding will allow the development of the theatre to move on to its next stage, and we can now look forward to the work of the Citz benefitting the community, Glasgow and beyond in the decades to come.”

The Citz was established in 1943, and moved to Gorbals Street in 1945.
