Funding boost for East Ren’s young carers

East Renfrewshire Carers’ Centre has been awarded funding from Carers Trust, a charity for unpaid carers, and its Time for Change grants programme.

The aim is to support those young adults juggling the demands of looking after a loved one with passing exams, going to college or university or applying for a first job.

Some 20,000 young carers aged 14-25 are expected to benefit across the UK — and it’s a welcome boost for those in East Ren, according to the local centre’s project manager, Mark Mulhern. He told The Extra: “We know that young adult carers face additional worries in relation to leaving school, going to college or university or getting that first full-time job.

“With this funding we hope to reach many young adult carers not already known to services including our own.

“I would encourage any young carer to seek the support they require.— with it, they will be able to make plans for their future and have the same opportunities as other young people.”

Dani, a young adult carer already known to the centre, added: “I know first-hand the difficulties and pressures of being a young carer. The support I received from the centre was crucial in helping me find and maintain my training place.

“I’m so pleased that many more young adult carers will be able to receive support as a result of this funding award.”
