Fundraising for Women’s Aid

Women’s Aid services in Eastwood received a boost at the weekend, thanks to a private screening of Suffragette in Hamilton.

The hotly anticipated — and apt — film centres on the British women’s suffrage movement of the late 19th and early 20th centuries, and stars Meryl Streep, Carey Mulligan, Helena Bonham Carter, Ben Whishaw, Brendan Gleeson and Anne-Marie Duff.

The event was organised to raise vital funds for Women’s Aid in South Lanarkshire and East Renfrewshire.

And it was a success, with more than £500 raised for the very worthy cause.

Councillor Mary Montague, who attended with East Ren supporters, told The Extra: “I must commend the organiser, my South Lanarkshire colleague councillor Monica Lennon, as well as event supporters and the women who are delivering these crucial and necessary services.”

East Ren’s convener for community safety and community services added: “Extra readers can still donate online by visiting www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/suffragette-screening-in-support-of-womens-aid-south-lanarkshireeast-ren-tickets-19082670782 and clicking ‘can’t attend’.

“My message to women who are experiencing abuse is that you are not alone, and confidential support — including refuge accommodation — is available for you at your own pace.
