Gala Day was a brolly good show

A community turned out in force last Saturday for their annual Gala Day celebrations . . . despite it being one of the wettest days of the summer so far.

Dressed in waterproofs and armed with brollies, crowds flocked to Lenzie Gala for the popular event held at Lenzie Rugby Club’s Viewfield ground.

The gala is organised by Lenzie Community Council each year. Spokesperson Liz Ibbotson said: “The community council would like to thank all those involved in our “Commonwealth Games” Gala.

“The weather wasn’t great but it was predicted and people turned up with brollies and macs to make the most of the occasion and to try - or simply watch - some of the many sporting activities featured on the day.

“As usual there were dancers to admire, stalls to browse and loads of eating and drinking opportunities.

“We would like to express our thanks to all the individuals, charities, businesses, churches and other organisations who contributed to make this a memorable, if damp, day for our community to enjoy.

“Very special thanks also to Lenzie Rugby Club and the Scouts, without whom the gala simply would not be possible, and also to Andrew Meek, who gave our Gala Queen Emily and her pageboy Teo an unforgettable tour of Lenzie in his 101 year old vintage car.

“And finally, we are particularly grateful again this year to the Woodilee Housebuilders Consortium for their continued financial support and to the Big Lottery Celebrate Fund for their support for our “Commonwealth Games” Gala in the year when the Commonwealth Games come to Glasgow.
