Gala occasions for Lenzie and Kirkintilloch

Communities in East Dunbartonshire are gearing up for two popular gala events which kick-off this weekend.

Organisers have put together a fun-packed programme for everyone to enjoy in Kirkintilloch and Lenzie.

The Lenzie Commonwealth Games Gala Day takes place this Saturday, June 7, and promises to be bigger and 
better than before.

This year, the Gala Queen’s Parade will leave Lenzie Station car park at 12pm en route to Lenzie Rugby Club.

Being crowned Queen this year is Emily Dick, a P7 pupil at Holy Family Primary School.

Councillor Anne Jarvis, East Dunbartonshire’s Depute Provost will carry out the official ceremony.

Maids of honour are Erin Black from Millersneuk Primary, Molly Urquhart from Lenzie Primary and Avril Cosh from Lenzie Moss Primary. Page boy is Teo Dilieto, a P1 pupil at Holy Family Primary.

The gala day also has a special sporting theme to mark the approaching games in Glasgow this summer.

East Dunbartonshire Cycle Co-op is building a bicycle obstacle course to enable visitors to test their cycling skills.

There will also be the chance to test your hockey dribbling skills, find out how fit you are on the spin bikes and try your hand at javelin throwing.

A member of the organising committee said: “We are excited and delighted to celebrate this historic sporting year and thrilled to offer an afternoon packed with our own sporting activities.”

All the usual favourites will be on offer at the gala day, including fairground rides and a bouncy castle.

Kirkintilloch Gala Week, organised by the community council, gets underway on Saturday (June 7) with a performance by Kelvin Brass Band at 11am, followed by the crowning of Gala Queen Caitlyn Crawley at noon in the Regent Gardens.

Gala Day takes place n on Saturday, June 14. The gala parade will leave the library car park at 1pm, via Cowgate and Townhead en route to Woodhead Park.

Other highlights of the packed programme of activities include a fun fair, stalls, beat the goalie, duck herding and a special Olympian’s Schools Sports Event at Kirkintilloch High School 
on Thursday, June 12, at 6.30pm.
