Games to bring traffic clampdown to Hampden

Glasgow 2014 organisers have released a traffic plan showing how restrictions will apply at the Games venues, including the southside stadium, which will be used for athletics, as well as the closing ceremony.

George Vincent, project management and design manager, said: “Glasgow will be open for business throughout the Games, but it won’t be business as usual.

“Now is the right time to plan ahead and find out how you might be affected.

“If you live or work near a venue, we are putting in place measures to keep your community moving and help make sure you can enjoy being at the very heart of Glasgow’s biggest ever celebration.”

Hampden Park will be in use for an afternoon session on July 27, followed by three days of double sessions, three days of evening only sessions and the closing ceremony on August 3.

Security guards will be on site from June 1, when construction begins, and lockdown of the venue will take place on July 25.

Those who live within the Games zone will be issued with free parking permits, to be used on designated resident and business parking streets.

Other disruptions across the city include designated Games Lanes — and motorists who use them could face a fine.

John Fryer, Glasgow 2014 transport manager, said: “We are encouraging spectators to walk, cycle, use public transport or use a park and ride site to get to venues.

“The measures in the traffic management and parking plans are integral to making this as easy as possible.”

The next Commonwealth Games community information meeting will be held at Hampden on May 22, at 5.30pm.
