The local community in South West Glasgow were shocked at the appearance of freshly completed works on Craigton Road in Govan last week (October 30).
Glasgow City Council have since apologised for the quality and communication in the works, and have told GlasgowWorld that the contractor is scheduled to fix their workmanship later this month at no cost to the local authority.
The slurry of tarmac was left puddled and wet - beyond that residents on the road were not notified and no barrier was set up - meaning footprints, paw prints, and wheel imprints were quickly imprinted onto the fresh tarmac.
Local residents report leaving their flats before being told to stay in place while workers put down boards and cardboard for people to walk over the tarmac, the damage had already been done by this point though.
Work has been sorely needed on the roads around Govan for a number of years now, so for many residents these failed works sting particularly hard.
One local resident spoke to GlasgowWorld about the works, they said: “The recent resurfacing on Craigton Road has left all residents and neighbors feeling extremely let down.
“The quality of work is abysmal - far from what taxpayers should expect from publicly funded projects. It’s disgraceful and shameful to see money allocated by Glasgow City Council being squandered on such terrible workmanship.
“Adding to the frustration is the fact that the pavements are in dire straits and badly in need of resurfacing, yet they have been neglected. The lack of pride and attention to detail from the contractors is evident, leaving the community questioning the integrity of the tender process.
“Roads and pavements are essential infrastructure, and when they are left in such a poor state, it not only reflects poorly on the council’s oversight but also feels like a waste of public funds. The community deserves better.”
Work were completed by an external contractor, who are now returning to fix their work. The pictures showcased in this article were originally meant to be the finished product of the road, until local residents contacted their councillor and Glasgow City Council to immediately fix the works.
I have already raised this with officers as Darren emailed me about it. This was done by an external contractor who I have been told will be returning TODAY to repair this mess (at their expense)
A spokesman for Glasgow City Council said: “We are very sorry for the way this project has been delivered so far.
“We have liaised with our contractor on this matter and a number of issues have been acknowledged.
“An undertaking has been given to improve communication with residents about further work and also provide a clearer plan on how the new surface will be protected while it cures.
“There will be no cost to the council for these additional works, which will take place this month.”
For full transparency and so you can review the quality of work for yourself, we’ve included a number of pictures of the ‘completed’ works prior to the scheduled works later this month.
