Glasgow schools set for refurbishment

Work will begin on the first 59 sites set for redevelopment as early as next month, as part of Glasgow city council’s £40 million year one plan.

Southside schools to benefit in the near future include Pollokshields, Darnley, King’s Park, Mount Florida and St Conval’s primaries, as well as Eastwood nursery and Pollok children centre.

Renovations will include upgrading roofs, exterior walls and decoration, playgrounds and paths, fences and walls, as well as tackling drainage, dry rot, asbestos control and the removal of pigeon droppings.

Councillor Gordon Matheson, GCC leader, called the investment “great news for the citizens of Glasgow”, and said: “Our sole aim is to educate our children in buildings fit for purpose and I’m delightred to announce the first 59 schools and nurseries on year one of our five year, £250 million investment.

“This will not only benefit children and schools across Glasgow – this major capital investment will also provide a significant boost to the local economy.”

He added that “Education and jobs are both top priorities of this council – this administration has pledged to rebuild or refurbish every primary in the city, as well as every remaining early years and additional support for learning (ASL) school.”

Further surveys are being carried out in Glasgow’s remaining schools, with the refurbishments for years two to five expected to be announced this autumn.

Meanwhile, headteachers at the schools above will be contacted this week with a breakdown of planned works and timescales.
