Glowing report for care service

Ferndale Children’s Residential Unit, in Kirkintilloch, provides alternative care arrangements for nine children and young people from ages six-18 years who require to be accommodated away from home - providing a positive nurturing environment for all children who live there.

For the fourth consecutive year Ferndale’s quality of care and support, environment, staff and management and leadership were all rated as Grade 5 (Very Good) by the Care Inspectorate - the second highest grade available.

The inspection took place in October 2015 and was unannounced.

Councillor Michael O’Donnell, convener of East Dunbartonshire Council’s social work committee, said: “Once again the feedback received from the inspection was exceptionally positive, which highlights the excellent work that is being carried out by the team at Ferndale.

“Staff and management at the service continue to provide high standards of care and support for young people and their families. The service provides young people with a safe and secure environment in which they are encouraged to thrive and flourish and are supported to reach their potential. The report praises the culture of continuous improvement which has promoted positive leadership values in the staff team and it is pleasing to hear them get the recognition they deserve.

“Child-centred practices are the driving force for staff as they try to make sure the young people have positive experiences and good support to develop the skills they need for independent living.

“This has resulted in some excellent outcomes for young people, including successful returns to their families.”
