Govanhill arts scene takes to the streets

From the hub of Govanhill Baths and out onto the streets, the southside neighbourhood is making the most of its creative neighbours with another day celebrating the arts at local level.

The festival takes place between the Westmoreland Street Gardens and Baths, offering up street performances, art installations and food and fun from local artists and groups.

Multicultural foodie collective Soul Food Sisters will be catering to the crowds with North African cuisine, while South Seeds spread the word on their growing projects.

The Crazy Shambolica Big Band — a “mad free jazz, electro-techno, majestic waltz trio” — will be performing, as will upcycling group Rags to Riches, taking Zero Waste Binment out onto the streets.

Artist Ailie Rutherford will be setting up her People’s Bank of Govanhill, created during her time as artist in residence at Govanhill Baths, while Govanhill Voices and Federica Esposito raise the roof from within the historic Baths building.

Streetland’s Matt McKenna told The Extra: “There will be artworks from Chris Coleman-Smith and Jane McInally — our artist in residence — on display in The Steamie.

“We’re also hosting a poetry night in the evening — we did this for the first time last year and it was a great success.”

And for those who don’t know enough about Govanhill, there are two tours — a guided tour led by the Alexander Greek Thomson Society, and the Govanhill People’s History audio tour, which can be downloaded and listened to as you walk.
