Iconic Glasgow sports shop set to close its doors after almost a century in business following Frasers Group buyout

The business has operated in Glasgow in some form since the 1930s

Greaves Sports, one of Glasgow’s most iconic stores, is set to close its doors after almost a century in business.

The business is yet to publicly announce the closure, but signs for a closing down sale have appeared in windows in recent days. It comes months after Mike Ashley’s Frasers Group bought the brand in July 2026.

Greaves Sports has a history dating back to the 1930s when it operated as Clydesdale Rubber Company selling Wellington boots and sheepskin coats. The business eventually changed direction under the stewardship of brothers Jim and Bill Greaves, transforming into the iconic sporting goods store Greaves Sports in 1967.

The shop can namecheck a host of celebrity visitors over the years, including Bing Crosby and Frank Sinatra who visited to buy a set of golf clubs in the 1950s. In more recent times, Samuel L. Jackson and Eminem have been counted as customers.

The store has operated from its flagship store on Gordon Street for a number of years.
