Green bags turn white in food waste fight for East Dunbartonshire

East Dunbartonshire Council is urging all residents to continue to recycle their food waste, as they introduce different bags.

The area has an excellent track-record for recycling, with some of the highest rates in the country. The council hopes this will continue as they make slight changes to the system.

Grace Irvine, Director of Neighbourhood services, said: “We are introducing new food waste bags but want to reassure all residents that there are no other changes. When someone runs out of food bags, they are asked to tie a bag to the handle of their food caddy. Our operatives then know they have run out and arrange to deliver them a fresh supply of bags.

“The company which processes our food waste was having some problems with the old green bio bags as they were clogging up their system. We have now changed supplier and are using white pedal bin liners. As well as being

cheaper, these have the added benefit of being able to be removed from the processing system and made into fuel pellets.”

Residents are also asked to assist the process by removing the bag tied to the handle once they have received their new bags.

Grace Irvine added: “To make the system work, we all need to do our bit and we want to assure our residents that we now have a secure supply of bags and don’t foresee any problems with food waste bags going forward. We can’t do this alone and need everyone to get on board and continue to make East Dunbartonshire one of the highest recycling areas in the country. I also wish to take this opportunity to thank residents for continuing to support our recycling efforts.”
