Builder McCarthy & Stone has been granted permission to build the apartments on the ground of the former BP garage in Kirkintilloch Road.

The run-down petrol station has lain empty for more than a decade, with local people branding it “an eyesore.”

There were also concerns it would become a target of vandals.

A number of prospective deals fell through before the council granted permission for the housing development.

The new development of one and two-bedroom flats will be exclusively for people aged 60 and over.

Construction is expected to begin in April 2015.

Suzanne McElhiney, of McCarthy & Stone said: “Everything we do is built around a belief that later life can be rich, rewarding and fulfilling.

“This is why we’re thrilled to be bringing a new offering to Bishopbriggs.”
