Units at the Greenlaw Village shopping complex are filling up fast - and with a school and growing number of homes nearby, as well as a new retirement development, residents have voiced concerns about speeding traffic leaving the motorway.

In a letter to The Extra, councillor Charlie Gilbert writes: “I received a complaint from a Crookfur resident who said there have been many requests for a green man crossing at the far end of Crookfur Road.

“Cars come flying off the motorway and it is difficult to cross at peak time, never mind at rush hour. She is concerned, especially for children and mothers with prams trying to cross from the school or from the shops.”

Twitter follower Ann Nugent agreed: “Shops, retirement homes, new estates with planned play areas and no pedestrian crossings at all - it’s a very serious threat to all, especially the elderly and young.”

@macelven added that there “needs to be a crossing on Crookfur Road somewhere between Harvie and Stewarton Road. Drivers just ignore the 30mph limit”.

A spokeswoman for East Renfrewshire agreed that action is needed to meet increased footfall, adding: “With the continuing development in that area, we have been looking into what we can do for the benefit of pedestrians.

“We are examining different sources of external funding for this, and would hope to be able to take some action next year.”
