Mrs Fellows said: “The plight of the Tibetan people is often unknown to people around the world.

“For decades the Tibetan people have been subject to terrible human rights abuses such as torture, discrimination and religious and cultural oppression at the hands of the Chinese government.

“The UK’s Human Rights Act 1998 secures many of the rights that Tibetans and others around the world do not possess, but that we can take for granted. These include the right to life, prohibition of torture and free religious expression.

“Richard Gere has been a fantastic advocate for the Tibetan people and their struggle. It was an honour to meet him and I commend him for his commitment to human rights.”

Away from the politics, Mrs Fellows admitted the encounter left her starstruck. She said: “It was a great thrill to meet Richard and you can see from the photo exactly how excited I was.”

Gere was in Scotland recently, meeting fans outside Glasgow Film Theatre where he was promoting his new movie in which he plays a homeless man.
