Help us tell the tale of Cumbernauld

The woman behind an ambitious project to tell the story of Cumbernauld has been explaining how the public can get fully involved.

Edinburgh University-based Elin Jones is the public engagement officer on the Tower Block project and exhibition at the Muirfield Centre on Saturday, September 24.

This is the same event which has prompted a callout for old photographs of Cumbernauld - which can be handed over and returned, after a digitalised image of each shot is taken for a new archive.

This is being undertaken by the exhibition’s partner, the Scottish Urban Past Project - and will effectively tell the story of Cumbernauld.

Ms Jones said: “The exhibition will examine the social and architectural history o f Cumbernauld.

“Although tower blocks feature, it’s intended to be about postwar planning and building more broadly.

“I think the day will be a great opportunity to share photographs and memories and for people from the area to find out more about Cumbernauld’s past in Scotland’s history through the small exhibition.

Ms Jones also welcomed the fact that local resident Jean O’Reilly will be offering guided social history walks on the day which are free.

She said: “Jean grew up in Cumbernauld, still lives here and has a very rich knowledge of the history of the area from its inception in the 1950s to the present day.

The event, in the newly revamped community centre in Seafar’s Brown Road will run from 10am to 4pm.
