Hepburn visits Gaelic school

MSP Jamie Hepburn visited Fèis Lannraig a Tuath, the Gaelic language and cultural summer school, which took place in Greenfaulds High School.

Now in its tenth year, the Fèis offers classes through the medium of Gaelic in a variety of musical instruments and activities such as drama, art and shinty.

Around 50 children attended this year’s summer programme, and during his visit, Hepburn met with organisers and tutors, and was given a tour around the various classes.

The Fèis runs over four days, and finished on Friday, August 2, with an evening concert where the children got the chance to show off what they had learned.

He said: “It was great to get to visit the Fèis and to see for myself the great work being done and all the fun being had. It is fantastic to see the opportunities that a summer school like this gives children to try out a range of different instruments and activities and to use their Gaelic outside the classroom.”

He added: “After ten years the Fèis is going from strength to strength and the numbers of children returning to it year after year are testament to is success.

“Indeed some of those who attended as pupils over the years are now working as tutors themselves. ”

“It is just one of the many exciting events and initiatives going on throughout Cumbernauld and Kilsyth to promote Gaelic language and culture. Building on these successes is key to securing the future of the language in this area and, indeed throughout Scotland.”

The visit was part of the MSP’s continued support for Gaelic in the area.

This followed on from his efforts to help the North Lanarkshire Gaelic Forum, Foram Lannraig a’ Tuath, secure a Gaelic Hub for the area.
