Hyndford Mills open days

IN the three years since the formation of the Clydesdale Mills Society, a lot has been achieved.

The major objective of excavating and exploring the history of the then derelict Hyndford Mills site, near Cobblehaugh Farm on the banks of the River Clyde, is well advanced but with lots still to do.

Awards for All funding has enabled excavation and consolidation to continue and the acquisition of IT equipment.

"A total of 174 historic mill sites, either wind or water powered, have now been identified all of which had a massive input on previous generations," said Ken Fawell, society chairman.

Hyndford Mills will stage open days as part of the Festival of British Archaeology from Saturday, July 17, to Saturday, July 31. Artefacts from the site will also be on display at Lanark Library.

People are also welcome to visit on Thursdays from 6pm or on Saturdays from 10am, the excavation days.
