Until this week it was thought there was a legal guarantee of the eventual rebuilding of the old Lanark Market wooden auction ring, dismantled ‘temporarily’ ten years ago while the Braidfute Retail Park was built on the old market site.

However, South Lanarkshire Council has indicated that it might let the developers off the hook from the promise it made to restore the building in return for planning permission to create the retail complex.

It has said enforcing the planning condition might not be in the “public interest”.

Ironically, just last week the future of its ‘sister’ stone auction ring, left standing empty on the site for ten years, was assured when a restaurant chain confirmed plans to refurbish it.
