Inspired by the imminent introduction of the 5p carrier bag charge, which comes into force from October 20, the event will see the Avenue distribute its own hessian ‘bags-for-life’ in exchange for a £2 donation, with all profits going to Asda’s nominated charity Cash for Kids.

Michelle McCabe, centre manager at The Avenue, said: “The event will see East Renfrewshire Council (waste department) on-site to provide shoppers with information of the forthcoming carrier bag charge as well as promoting its Love Food, Hate Waste campaign.

“And in addition to our own hessian bags, East Renfrewshire Council will be handing out information booklets with recipe cards and helpful hints and tips on saving waste and money when shopping. They’ll even have some ‘Love Food, Hate Waste’ promo branded freezer clips to give away — and trolley coins too!”
