It's the Great Wall of Milngavie

During a site visit with Milngavie In Bloom and council officers, it was found that a 30-year-old wooden post retaining wall near Allander Road badly needed to be replaced.

Kirkintilloch stonemason George Boyd was called in to transform the rotten and crumbling wood into a whinstone faced retaining wall.

Cleverly designed to resemble a dry stone dyke, it is built to outlast the previous wall many times over.

Neighbourhood Services convener Councillor Stewart MacDonald, said: “The new wall is a fantastic new addition to Milngavie which greatly enhances the nearby West Highland Way by providing an attractive feature for visitors and residents alike.

“This has been a great example of partnership working. The end result is something that will benefit the whole community.”

He added: “I wish to thank Milngavie In Bloom for all their hard work to make sure the West Highland Way is improved for visitors and residents alike.”

Milngavie In Bloom vice chairwoman, Jenny Overton, said: “For two years Milngavie in Bloom has been working to improve the start of the West Highand Way. It is one of Milngavie?s hidden jewels.

“Over these two years Milngavie in Bloom has had ongoing help from East Dunbartonshire Council in various ways”.

She added: “When we discussed the problem of the old wooden wall, the council agreed to construct this superb new stone wall, which lifts the whole area.

“Many local people use the West Highland Way to get to and from the village, and we have heard nothing but praise for the design and construction.

“It has come like a Christmas present to cheer us up.”
