It’s time for drivers to learn lesson outside schools in Kirkintilloch and Bishopbriggs

East Dunbartonshire Council launched a campaign to clamp down on drivers who park irresponsibly near schools at busy times amid a raft of concerns. However, the issue has shown no signs of abating.

Fresh concerns have been raised at schools in Kirkintilloch, Bishopbriggs and Lenzie.

Rebecca Smith said: “Holy Family is a nightmare as a resident in the street.”

Debbie Smith said: “It’s the same people on zig-zags at Holy Family every day.”

Another local said police issued a ticket to a driver at Holy Family Primary for parking in the school bus area.

Paul McGoldrick recently reported an alleged incident to police after the driver of a 4x4 overtook him when he stopped in the Hillhead area to allow a lollipop woman and child across the road.

Other readers flagged up concerns outside Lairdsland Primary, St Ninian’s High and Millersneuk Primary in Lenzie.

One mum said: “My daughter has nearly been hit by a person reversing their car on the pavement and clearly not looking – I am fed-up with it.”

The council recently launched the Park Smart campaign in co-operation with Police Scotland.

It has been provided with 20 weather-proof banners which can be put up at school gates where there are particular concerns.

Inspector John Hunter, communities inspector, East Dunbartonshire, said: “People tell us that road safety continues to be a priority for them, especially around schools.

“The Park Smart campaign is running at local schools and we urge parents and other road users to drive and park safely in and around schools, and consider the safety of all children and pedestrians if parking at the school at drop-off /collection times.

“The safety of children and pedestrians is paramount. Vehicles which are parked dangerously or illegally will be dealt with accordingly.”

The council’s director of neighbourhood services, Grace Irvine, said: “Inconsiderate parking is an issue for the majority of our primary schools and we continuously appeal to parents and carers dropping off their children at school to remember the dangers parked cars pose to pupils.

“The important issue is the safety of the children and selfish parking is a real threat to young people going to and from school.”
