A consultation process is now underway to decide if a cross-docking station can be retained at the site, which employs 270 workers.

A spokesman for DHL confirmed the newsand said: “Staff have been informed of the decision and they will shortly enter into consultation with site representatives to discuss their options. DHL will continue to work closely with Marks and Spencer to mitigate disruption to our colleagues during this difficult time.”

A spokesperson for Marks & Spencer said: “We understand that it will be an unsettling time for all involved and will do all we can to offer support throughout the process.”
