John, 87, completes Clyde zipslide for Paul O’Gorman lieukaemia research

The stunt - in support of the Paul O’Gorman lieukaemia research centre at the University of Glasgow, raised over £1,000.

Eastfield resident John (87), a former British Rail worker, has been supporting leukaemia research for a decade by way of “giving something back” for the survival of his daughter.

This year’s zip slide - 1,000 feet across the river from the top of a 150-foot high crane in Finnieston, had originally been planned for April, but a combination of bad weather and the Commonwealth Games meant it was delayed until this month.

After completing the challenge, John said: “It is very exciting, once you’re up at the top of the crane there’s no option but to go for it.

“All being well I hope to do this again next year.

“There has definitely been a response from News and Chronicle readers and I would like to thank everyone who has donated money”.

A spokeswoman for the research centre said: “John’s energy and enthusiasm is inspiring.

“He has generously supported The Paul O’Gorman Leukaemia Research Centre for more than ten years - his commitment and passion for supporting leukaemia research is clear.

“This is the third year that John has participated in the Zip Slide across the River Clyde.

“The funds John has raised by taking part in the Zip Slide help to support vital research being carried out at the Paul O’Gorman Leukaemia Research Centre.”
