Joyce’s fundraising birthday

A caring Kirkintilloch pensioner has marked a landmark birthday by supporting a cause close to her heart.

Joyce Shearer, who has lived in the town for more than 30 years, recently turned 80.

She asked family and friends to not buy her presents, and instead make a donation to charity Alzheimer Scotland.

Joyce’s late husband, James, was affected by the illness.

The appeal raised an amazing £700.

Joyce said: “I’d just like to thank all those who gave so generously - it meant much more to me than presents.”

A charity spokesperson said: “It was very kind of Joyce to think of our charity on her birthday and we hope she had a wonderful day.”
