Keith and Annette Jones are Commonwealth Games Clyde-siders

KEITH and Annette Jones, a couple from Westerwood, have both been invited to participate in the 2014 Commonwealth Games as Clyde-siders.

Keith is no stranger to international sporting events as he is a former hockey umpire and tournament director, who hopes the Games will boost Scottish interest in hockey.

And wife Annette is a semi-retired nurse, who primarily works on a local basis at various health centres in Glasgow. She has been invited to help provide medical services to competitors based at the athletes’ village in Dalmarnock.

Keith said: “We volunteered to make ourselves available for the full length of the Games. I’m also looking forward to a pre-Games hockey tournament which will see boys and girls compete on Glasgow Green. It’s also a chance to meet people from the world of hockey and catch up on old times.”

More than 50,000 people applied for 15,000 volunteering opportunities at the Games, which will take place from July 23 to August 3.

The Games should prove to be a busy and challenging event for Keith, Annette and their fellow Clyde-siders as almost all of the million tickets were sold in November due to what organisers called an “unprecedented” demand for tickets. Track and field, diving, cycling, gymastics and hockey events are among those to have completely sold out.
