Prosecutor Julie O’Hara told how he “struggled” with her and sexually attacked her, violating her private parts. The jury took only just over one hour to return a majority guilty verdict.

Defence lawyer Mark Fallon said: “He continues to deny the offence, but accepts the jury’s verdict as he must.”

Sheriff Frank Pieri, jailing Milligan, told him: “I have considered all the reports and risk assessment prepared on you and everything that has been said on your behalf.

“However, this was a terrible assault on this woman. and the court must mark this court of conduct. There is no alternative but to impose a custodial sentence.”

The sheriff backdated the sentence to February 9, when Milligan had his bail revoked and was remanded in custody. He has been put on the Sex offenders’ Register for 10 years.
