Kirkintilloch supermarket plans are out for consultation

Real estate firm Colliers International, along with Tame Construction, are considering the Woodilee Industrial Estate as the ideal site for the project.

It is claimed the new venture could bring as many as 300 new jobs to the town.

Colliers have already lodged a planning application notice with East Dunbartonshire council are keen to gauge the views of the community.

They held an event last Thursday at the William Patrick Library to share their plans and survey the public.

Following the consultation, the developers say 67% of respondents would like more choice in their supermarket, while 94% pledged to support such a development on the Woodilee estate.

William and Charlotte McKinnon, who both live in Lenzie, said: “At the moment we drive to Cumbernauld for our weekly shop, so a larger local supermarket with more choice would be ideal.”

Anthony Aitken, head of planning with Colliers said last week’s consultation was ‘positively received’ by the community.

He added: “The overall feeling was that the town currently lacks a supermarket large enough for doing your weekly shopping.

“Local people usefully provided details of matters that we will consider further in preparing a planning application, which emphasises the importance of engaging with the local community.”

The developers are aiming to lodge a full planning application in the autumn.
