Kirkintilloch town centre pilot scheme

The crossing at Catherine Street and Cowgate is to be completely re-shaped as the council look to change driver behaviour passing through the town.

The move will also give pedestrians and cyclists the right of way at the junction, and is to be monitored 24 hours a day by council officials.

Sign posts has already been erected around the crossing, with the trial set to begin on Monday, August 11.

The council say this ‘rebalancing of movement’ will help inform the its Masterplan to boost the town centre.

Council leader Rhondda Geekie said: “The Catherine Street junction with Cowgate is always very busy and reducing traffic disruption - as well as giving pedestrians and cyclists priority - has been identified as one of the goals of the Masterplan.

“I look forward to seeing the results of this trial and how we can take forward the improvements in Kirkintilloch town centre.

“Please be aware if you are driving in Catherine Street that there may be some disruption as road users adjust to the changes.

“However, in the long-term this trial will help to inform the Masterplan and our ambitious plans for the town centre.”

The pilot is expected to last for the next four weeks.

Following the trial, officers will analyse the information gathered and use it to further inform Cowgate Street design works - which includes the Catherine Street junction.
