Lanark mourns the death of Scott Robinson

Through his work with the Daily Record and then Sunday Mail for over thirty years, his witty writing style - superbly suited to features and showbiz stories - won him fans not only throughout Scotland but amongst the paper’s large ‘expatriate’ readership throughout the world.

Scott was a proud Lanarkian, educated at the Grammar before joining the newspaper industry during what is now regarded as the ‘Golden Age’ of print journalism.

He by-passed the traditional reporter’s apprenticeship on a local paper to go straight onto the staff of a national title, first the Record and later its Sunday stablemate.

Scotty, typically, always put this down to “sheer luck” but it was probably entirely due to his talent for writing entertaining and informative copy being obvious from an early age and being spotted by an astute editor.

Whoever made that decision to hire the young Scotty Robinson made a wise choice as this began a long and successful career.

His naturally friendly, sociable character made him perfect for the features desk and Scotty won lifelong friends among many of the stars he interviewed over the years.

Scotty also became something of a legendary character within his own profession, especially for his mischievous and sometimes inspired ‘wind-ups’ of colleagues.

He retired a decade ago but did not have long to enjoy that retirement before he found himself in a ten-year-long battle against cancer, a fight he finally lost last week at his home in Lanark’s Hardacres.

His funeral is today (Wednesday) at St Nicholas Church, Lanark.

Scotty is survived by his wife Jean, son Chris and grandchildren he doted on.
