Lanark Post Office saga continues

A MONTH after Lanark’s sole Post Office was knocked out of action by fire, there is still no clear sign of when services will be restored.

As reported, the St Leonard Street office was the target of an alleged arson attack on June 7 and since then customers – many elderly – have had to travel to Carstairs, Crossford, Carnwath and Carluke for Post Office services.

One elderly Lanark lady told the Gazette that she’d gone to the Carstairs office for a payment one day to find the sub-office there had run out of money; she then had to get a bus back to Lanark to catch another one to Carluke to go to the sub-office there.

There are also businesses in the Lanark area who still heavily rely on the postal service for mail order deliveries.

The town did, until a few years ago, have two far closer sub-post offices, in the Westport and at Kirkfiedbank, but these were declared redundant by the Post Office which stated that a single, main office would suffice.
