Lanark set to host Scotland's first alpaca show

An alpaca show was held at the market as part of the Scottish Smallholders and Growers Festival there in September, and now the The Scottish Alpaca Group is building on its success with the show on April 23.

It is the first such show in Scotland, and will be open to the public.

Over 100 alpacas will be on show, and anyone with an interest in alpacas or just curious about these unique animals, is welcome to come along and enjoy the day, and ask any questions.

The showing will start at 9am and is likely to run until around 4.30pm as the animals compete for the championship.

There will also be examples of fibre, yarns and gloriously soft and warm items made from the fabulous fibre these lovely animals produce, to admire or to buy.

“Alpaca numbers are increasing in Scotland with new farm enterprises starting up and this show will be the place to go to find the animals, the breeders and the processors,” said Group secretary Pauline Robson.

“You will find that alpaca people are very enthusiastic about their animals and are usually happy to talk all things alpaca from dawn until dusk.

“But be warned – alpacas are addictive!”

Admission is free, but donations will be taken for Marie Curie.
