Lanimer Day 2015 Beating the Retreat Slideshow

Lanark Cross was bursting at the seams on Thursday evening when Lord Cornet Gordon Gray rode in to make his declaration.

Escorted by former Cornets and visitors on horseback and massed bands, he announced that he had checked all Lanark’s March Stones and none had been molested.

Formalities over, the rest of the evening was given over to a virtuoso performance by pipe and silver bands, still in glorious sunshine.

From the early notes of Dumfries Town Band’s New York New York, to the awesome finale with all the pipes and silver bands playing Highland Cathedral the spectacle was stunning.

There were wonderful performances from Dumfries and Coalburn Silver Bands and pipe bands of Lanark and District, Coalburn IOR and North Lanarkshire Schools.

A lone piper from Lanark and District played the Lament and the salute this year was taken by John Brown, vice Lord Lieutenant of Lanarkshire.

The trophy given in memory of the late Brian Edgar for the best band in the procession went to Lanark and District, a band already celebrating becoming British Champions in its section.

The band were also first overall in the West of Scotland Branch Championships in their grade, first for drumming and first overall in the confined section too!

Freelance photographer Sarah Peters was on hand to capture the action for the Gazette and her pictures are featured in our slideshow, created for your viewing pleasure by Johnston Press communities hub deputy editor Julie Currie.

Sarah’s pictures of all the Lanimer Day action can be purchased on the Buy it Now section on this website. And remember to check out our crowning ceremony and procession videos from the big day too!
