Lanimer Week 2014 almost upon us

David, who is Pipe Major of Lanark and District, former Cornets and dignitaries will be piped down from the Memorial Hall in the first procession of the week.

The Kirkin’ in St Nicholas Church, is at noon.

Monday sees the oldest of Lanark’s traditions, when the Cornets, supported by townspeople, check the Burgh’s boundaries on the Perambulation of the Marches.

The checking of the March stones is said to have been a condition when Lanark was granted a Royal Charter, reputedly back in 1140.

The Perambulation sets off from Hope Street at 6pm.

Back at the Cross, the Celia Orr dancers have a display from 7.15pm, and around 8pm the Cornet and his supporters mount up for the procession to the Cross, where David will receive the Burgh Standard and be sashed as Lord Cornet 2014.

The Lord Cornet’s Ride Out is on Tuesday, sent off from the Cross at 4.30pm – and riders are invited to join in. (There is also a junior Ride Out leaving Lanark Racecourse this Friday at 6pm and competent young riders are welcome.)

The Lanimer Horse Chases take place at the Racecourse at 6.30pm, then the ride goes on to New Lanark, where the village presents a Loving Cup to Lanimer Queen-elect Paige McCulloch.
