Last call for movie buffs to join film festival board

Organisers of the Southside Film Festival are still on the lookout for volunteers to form a new advisory board, with the deadline extended to August 31.

The festival has championed local filmmakers and venues since it began in 2011, in the hopes of putting southside cinema on the map.

Now, director Karen O’Hare and co are hoping to expand - and need creative types interested in the southside surroundings to help them do it.

A festival representative said: “Southside Film Fest was established in response to the lack of a local cinema in the southside of Glasgow.

“Fast forward to 2014 and there is a plan from G1 Group to open a cinema in Shawlands, and Cineworld are due to open a multiplex in Silverburn in early 2015.

“We have decided this is a good time to refocus the aims and objectives of the festival. We still want to continue to support local filmmakers and to continue to produce one off pop-up cinema events and host site specific screenings — we also recognise the potential of the festival to grow and develop.”

The next step is establishing an advisory board, and the fest team are keen to attract filmmakers, writers, musicians and artistes in particular to have their say on the future of southside cinema, as well as those with experience in community arts, fundraising, journalism and business.

Anyone else with a love for the southside and for the flicks is welcome along too, and board members will be asked to attend quarterly board meetings (expenses paid).

Volunteers are also needed — in particular, a new secretary or treasurer — and anyone interested in helping out at festival events is asked to get in touch.

Movie buffs are asked to submit a CV and web link (if applicable) to [email protected] along with a motivation statement by midnight on August 31.
