Laura has designs on the main prize

Laura Monaghan, from Shawlands, studies HND Fashion Design and Manufacture at Glasgow Clyde College.

She competed against undergraduates from institutions across Scotland in the 2015 Society of Dyers and Colourists International Design Competition.

Entrants were tasked with designing a garment or accessory with the theme Buy less, Choose well.

Laura (32) whose design was entitled Re Worked, said: “The theme of the competition was all about the importance of investing in high-quality pieces that will last, rather than items that are made from cheaper materials.

“I made a top out of boiled wool, as this is a very durable fibre which actually looks better as time goes on.”

Laura will now represent Scotland at the national UK final in May, and if successful will compete on behalf of the UK at the international final.

The judging panel, which consisted of Malcolm Campbell (Managing Director of The Cloth of Kings), Lyndsey Moore (Design and Product Developer for Belinda Robertson) and Brian Hinnigan (Sales Director for Johnston’s of Elgin), praised Laura for her outstanding use of colour, texture and style.

Laura’s lecturer, Morag Marshall, said: “Laura is a naturally gifted, creative student whose work has a distinctive personal handprint.”

The competition started back in July last year and UK finals, where Laura will compete against the other regional finalists, will take place at the end of this month in Nottingham.

The winner will represent the UK at the grand final which will take place in November, and feature competitors from all over the world. The overall winner will take home £1,000 in cash and the prestigious Veronica Bell Trophy.

The competition is open to fashion and textile design undergraduates in Australia, Bangladesh, China, Hong Kong, India, Ireland, New Zealand, Pakistan, Portugal, Singapore, South Africa, Thailand and the UK.
