Lenzie drug smuggling suspect is refused bail

A young woman from Lenzie is facing months in jail awaiting trial after being refused bail by a Peruvian judge.

Melissa Reid (20) was remanded in custody after her first court appearance, along with co-accused Michaella McCollum (20), from Northern Ireland.

They are accused of trying to smuggle around £1.5million-worth of cocaine out of the country, but have previously claimed they were forced to carry the drugs at gunpoint.

Ms McCollum’s lawyer recently told the media that the pair would be pleading not guilty to the charges.

If found guilty they face up to 15 years in prison, but they could also be locked up for months, or even years, awaiting trial.

Melissa’s family have now set up a ‘Support Melissa Reid’ Facebook page to allow people to “voice support for Melissa and her family”. More than 2000 people are currently following it.
