Nationally the attack on the Lesmahagow cash machine is being linked to raids which used chemicals to blast open cash machines in other parts of the country, particularly in the Aberdeenshire area.

Around £100,000 was stolen in a raid on a cash machine in Kirriemuir, Angus, in December, and cash machines were ripped out of shops in Aberdeen and in Banchory this year

Police in that area believe the Lesmahagow robbery, in the early hours of the Sunday morning, was probably carried out by the same gang.

Other reports suggest that the gang are led by two named thieves, originally from Merseyside, who are on the run. They are said to be the last robbers at large from a gang who raided 31 cash machines across the UK.

A spokeswoman for the police investigating the Lesmahagow raid told the Gazette on Thursday that they could not say if the same criminals were involved.

“We cannot rule it out,” she said.

“We cannot say yes, but we cannot rule it out.”
