Lesmahagow Community Council chairman Dave Ritchie said: “It’s pretty shocking.

“I have lived in the village all my days and these things don’t normally happen in Lesmahagow. It’s very unusual and I just can’t believe it.

“I think there should be more police patrols in the village. I can’t remember the last time I actually saw a police officer in the village.

“I know they are under-resourced and spread pretty thin, but people are worried because of these incidents.”

Community Council secretary Karen McKay added: “I was very shocked when I heard the news considering it is the second time that the bank has been robbed in such a short space of time.

“Looking on Facebook, a number of local residents are outraged and angered by it. Some people feel that since the police front office counter closed there has been a rise in crime in the village. That is certainly the perception.”
