It’s believed PC Kelly was staying in a holiday cottage in the town’s Rose Lane when he was found in the early hours of Sunday.

Social media was rife with rumours that the officer had been savagely beaten, however a spokesman for the police dismissed the rumours saying: “Police in Fife have carried out extensive inquiries after a 26-year-old man was found with serious injuries in St Andrews last weekend.

“The incident occurred in Rose Lane around 2am on Sunday. The man was taken to Ninewells Hospital, Dundee, where he continues to be treated.

Officers have now concluded that this incident was as a result of an accident and there are no suspicious circumstances.”

It is thought the officer may have fallen from a height or been struck by a vehicle.
