Local business digs in to help OAP gardeners

In October last year the Herald reported on three dedicated gardeners with an aggregate age of 251 who were living in a retirement complex.

The OAPs, who have all been retired for at least 15 years, live at Schaw Court in Bearsden - a sheltered housing scheme run by Trust Housing.

Hughie Spencer (87), Bob Wotherspoon (80) and John McMillan (84) decided that summertime planting just wasn’t up to scratch and that they could take charge of this area.

When they moved in two years ago, the ‘old boys’ got fed up looking at empty, dismal containers and flowerbeds full of weeds which did nothing to inspire anyone.

Full of renewed vigour the three got together and came up with a plan to put things right.

But that plan almost ground to a halt as the ‘Heath-Robinson’ lean-to shed they were using was falling apart.

Well things have moved on and our appeal proved succesful with building company Concept Building & Roofing stepping up to the plate.

Director Alex Robertson said: “The Trust who run and operate Schaw Court are great neighbours of ours, and when I read of the plight their gardening trio had back in October 2015, I realised I couldn’t just sit back and ignore it.

“Hughie, Bob and John are an example to us all, despite their advanced years they continue to ensure that the grounds and planters surrounding their home are in top form throughout the summer with wonderful displays of colour that really brighten the place up no end.

“It’s a delight to come to work in such beautiful surroundings that they ensure are kept clean and tidy.

“So being able to help them out with a new shed was something I felt was important when I read of the appeal in the Herald.

“Concept Building and Roofing believe in putting something back into the community where we live and operate, and I can see no better way to do this than by supporting three exemplary individuals who go out of their way to brighten others lives when, quite frankly, they could be sitting back in retirement, putting their feet up and taking it a bit easier.”

Bob said: “We are all so grateful to the Herald for highlighting our predicament, and managing to find someone willing to donate a new shed.

“We are astounded with the generosity shown by Alex Robertson who has gone out of his way, despite the weather, to make sure he and his team built the perfect shed for our needs.”
