New Scottish Government waste regulations mean that businesses are now expected to separate all waste including paper, card, plastic, metals and glass for recycling.
Also, all food businesses producing over 50kg of food waste per week must present it for separate collection, unless they’re located in a rural area.
Businesses can employ East Dunbartonshire Council to help them meet the new regulations, or engage a private waste contractor. Council officers have visited all of its current commercial customers to explain the new regulations and likely costs.
The 500 new bins are now being delivered to commercial clients.
In the run-up to the introduction, several local businesses including Cafe Alba in Milngavie took part in a food recycling pilot scheme to calculate volumes of waste food, bin requirements and landfill savings.
Councillor Ashay Ghai, depute leader of the council and convenor of neighbourhood services, said: “We already have some of the highest recycling rates in the country and this new service will help us build on this position enormously.
“The visits allowed us to explain in full the new legislation and what is required. There were also discussions around frequency of collections and bin sizes.
“Many existing customers have been happy to sign up to the new recycling collections in order to meet the new legislation.”
