Locals worried that Bearsden is being targeted by criminals

And they are calling for a more visible police presence in the area with officers on the beat.

This follows an armed robbery at Hillfoot garage in Milngavie Road, Bearsden on Sunday, May 1 and a recent spate of break-ins to homes and sheds in Bearsden and Milngavie.

As well as thefts of expensive bicyles from garden sheds and garages, theives have been targeting homes to steal car keys.

On Milngavie and Bearsden Herald’s facebook page, Keith Pitt, said: “Seems to be Milngavie and Bearsden is getting a lot of attention these days from house break ins to car theft etc.”

Rebecca Chaudhuri said: “Is there something on the dark net about targeting Bearsden? Those poor folk.”

Robert Simmonds said: “Shocking, time folk opened their eyes to anything suspicious rather than walk/drive by, this place is getting worse, is there ever a day goes by that Bearsden is never mentioned regarding a robbery of some sort, lovely staff in there and it’s bang out of order that it was hit.”

And Graeme McIntosh commented on a different story about a police crackdown on speeding drivers: “Yeah target drivers once again! Just to fill the empty hole in their budgets! What about getting on the beat and target the housebreakings and armed robberies?”

Local area Commander Chief Inspector Craig Smith said: “I would like to reassure the public that we have continued to increase patrols in the Milngavie and Bearsden area, including vehicle stops as a visual deterrent to those intent on committing acquisitive crime in the area.

“We will also continue to deploy officers in plain clothes and would urge the public to remain vigilant, ensuring the security of their homes and that valuable items arent left visible and easily accessible.

“I’d also ask members of the public to contact the police immediately should they see anybody acting in a suspicious manner.”
