Traffic is backed up to junction five at Shotts, with the westbound lanes also affected and emergency services in attendance.

It is not yet known if anyone was injured in the accident.

One witness, Jack Symes, posted on Facebook: “Very bad smash at junction six on Newhouse, wish I never saw this.”

Another witness, Hayley Sarah Dornan, wrote: “Looks pretty serious, no driver to be seen but there were an awful lot of fire engines and ambulances trying to get in.

“It looks like the driver actually crashed into the outer barrier and then smashed through the inside barrier, pretty bad as the cabin of the lorry has been twisted backward!!”
